Canvas Wall Art Above a Dining Sideboard

A sideboard, buffet or credenza can anchor a dining-room wall, and canvas wall art helps turn it into a complete focal area. The most balanced result connects the artwork width to the furniture and leaves space for lighting, serving pieces and decor.

Choose the right canvas width

Start with artwork or a grouped arrangement that spans roughly 60 to 75 percent of the sideboard width. One wide canvas creates a calm modern look. Two coordinated pieces can work on a longer wall, while a vertical canvas may suit a compact sideboard on a narrow wall.

How high above the sideboard?

Begin with approximately 6 to 10 inches between the furniture top and the lower edge of the artwork. Adjust for lamps, vases and objects that remain on the sideboard. Keep the main image visible instead of allowing decor to cover it.

Coordinate with the dining table and lighting

View the wall from the table and the room entrance. A low pendant light or chandelier already creates a strong focal point, so the artwork should support it instead of competing with it. Repeat one color or material from the room, such as black metal, warm wood, blue upholstery or gold lighting.

Dining-room styles to consider

  • Modern: abstract, geometric, neutral or black-and-gold artwork.
  • Warm and traditional: landscape, floral, vintage or rustic canvas art.
  • Coastal: blue, ocean and light landscape subjects.
  • Minimal: one horizontal canvas with a restrained palette.
